A Review of Research on Developing Teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching

Abstract

Researchers agree that there is a distinctive body of mathematical knowledge which is important for teaching since Shulman (1986) introduced the pedagogical content knowledge. Many studies have tried to improve teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching in their situations, and some reported their efforts in journals that can be shared with other teacher educators. To summarize the progress made in implementing such efforts, this research reviews studies on the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching. Based on a search in five major databases, 81 empirical articles were reviewed in order to identify what has been reported to influence the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching and how these results are warranted. From the analysis of research problems, research design, and findings, this review argues that more studies need to identify factors influencing the development of teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching across programs and contexts, with particular attention on the role of practice-based approaches.
