The Correction Rate and The Reaction Time of Math Anxiety Groups and Math Achievement Groups through Visual Tasks of Arithmetic and Function

Abstract

In the previous research, students with high math anxiety(MA) were found to differ from their lower math anxiety peers on mathematical achievement. This study examines differences between the MA groups and between the achievement groups in the visual tasks of arithmetic and function areas where students solved with 20 items selected arbitrary out of 100 items, respectively. E-prime in the tasks measured correction rates and reaction times of 25 students from the 9th grade of one middle school in Gyeonggi province. Both MA groups and achievement groups significantly scored better on arithmetic tasks than function tasks and significantly took more time on function tasks than arithmetic tasks. This result implies that teachers should pay attention to their pedagogical approach in the process of teaching about these two adjacent areas of mathematics since the function is very different from the arithmetic. Also, the evidence that affective domain with MA related negatively with the cognitive domain with achievement was consistent with the previous studies.
