Delphi Study on the Concept and the Teaching and Learning Methods of Meta-affect in Mathematics

Abstract

There is an increased interest in meta-affect as the importance of metacognition in cognition is recognized in mathematics learning. This study reports the results of a Delphi survey on the concept of meta-affect and the teaching and learning methods for forming meta-affect. The participants of the study were eleven experts who conducted a study on meta-affect or affect in mathematics education. The experts showed convergent opinions about meta-affect concept such as awareness of, monitoring, evaluating, controlling, and using affects when learning mathematical concepts or solving problems. They suggested that meta-affect relates with the parenting attitude, teaching and learning methods, learning method, learner’s cognitive achievement and affective domain, and classroom culture. Moreover, they claimed that teaching and feedback on how to deal with affect in mathematics learning and the students’ understanding of emotional regulation will contribute to the formation of a meta-affect. Following this, I proposed follow-up studies on meta-affect.
