A Comparative Analysis of Linear Equations in Korean and UK Mathematics Textbooks for 7th Grade

한국과 영국 중학교 1학년 수학 교과서의 일차방정식 단원 비교 분석

Abstract

This study compares and analyzes the linear equations in Korea and UK Mathematics Textbooks for 7th Grade. Specifically, the textbooks were analyzed in terms of the unit composition of linear equations in each textbook, the content presentation methodology, and the problems included. The results indicated a similar overall composition of the subunits and degree of emphasis of the contents of linear equations in the textbooks from Korea and the UK. However, differences related to the introduction of terms related to equations, the definitions and proportions of mathematical terms, explanatory methods of equations, the use of examples and illustrations, and the types of problems included. This study analyzes the characteristics of curriculum of each country and provides suggestions for subsequent textbook development by systematically comparing the differences between the two textbooks.
