The Recognition and Needs of Mathematics Teachers for Instruction and Assessment to Enhance Mathematical Competency

Abstract

Recently, the mathematics curriculum is focused on competency development. Instructions and assessments should be changed according to this goal. This research surveyed the questionnaire that was concerned with students’ competency for teachers to enhance and troubles for improving instructions and assessments of mathematics. The questionnaire had open questions for 40 teachers that took part in the process-focused assessment training for mathematical competency development. We analyzed the teachers’ responses by use of the network analysis and did iterative comparative analysis. The results were as follows: First, the mathematics teachers recognized the mathematical competencies in 2015 revised mathematics curriculum as the ability to teach students. Second, on improvements in the mathematics classes and evaluations, teachers recognized conducting assessments in an activity-driven class before training. However, after they participated in training, they wanted to improve the instruction design, feedback and process-focused assessment of classes that their students participate in. Third, for these improvements, the teachers claimed that the need for objective standards, how to give feedback to students, various cases with specific materials, instructional and activity-oriented classes and cooperation of peer teachers.
